Heading Out Bush ?

  • Be careful of how much you pack on your roof rack. A heavy load on top increases the chances of a roll-over.

  • Wear your seatbelt.

  • Check all water containers for leaks. Store water in small containers instead of one large tank.

  • Pack a fire extinguisher.

  • Carry a HF radio compatible with the RFDS.  Mobile phones and CB radios will not work in remote areas.  You can buy a Flying Doctor HF radio from most two-way communication centres or you can hire one from RFDS bases.

  • Take all medication and repeat scripts.  See your doctor before you go. Get a summary of your medical history.

  • Take a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.

  • Wear clothing appropriate for the climate and walking shoes.  Take warmer clothes as it can get cold in the evenings.

  • When planning long road trips try not to travel in the hottest part of the year.

  • Take plenty of water.  Someone unaccustomed to the heat might need one litre of water every hour.

  • Every one who is planning a long road journey should consider doing a first aid course and make sure you pack a first aid kit.

+  SAFETY FIRST  +

Thinking about safety may not be the first thing on your mind when you and your family or friends head outdoors to go fishing, four wheel driving, take the boat out, or do any of those great outdoor activities we all love to do.  First and foremost, you're ready to have fun!   Safety is usually the last thing on most your minds but it is the most important so please take a good look around this page, click on the various safety links and have a good read, let it sink in and give safety a thought next time you venture out doors.  It could make all the difference.

Regardless of the type of activity, a few items you should always consider are: a hat, sunscreen, protective clothing, sunglasses and remember to take water with you.

It is a good idea to have a first aid kit in your car, boat, caravan and even your back pack at all times.  Check it before you leave home, ensure it is stocked with the appropriate items you may need.  These items will obviously vary depending on your activity.

Safety is every ones responsibility, don't think that some one else will take care of it.  If you see something that could become a safety hazard regardless of where you are, you should act on it or notify some one immediately to ensure that hazard is taken care of.  It could be the difference between some one living or dying.
